About Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Hair Treatment

What is PRP Treatment?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment for hair loss is a three-step medical procedure that involves drawing, processing, and injecting human blood into the scalp.

According to some medical experts, PRP injections initiate and sustain natural hair growth by boosting blood flow to hair follicles and increasing the thickness of the hair shaft. This method is sometimes paired with other hair loss treatments or drugs.

There is not enough research to prove that PRP is an effective hair loss treatment. However, PRP treatment has been around since the 1980s and has been used for issues such as damaged tendons, ligaments, and muscles.

PRP Treatment Course

PRP treatment is a three-step process. Most PRP regimens require three treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

Maintenance is required every 4-6 months.

  1. Typically, blood is drawn from the arm and spun in a centrifuge (a machine that rotates rapidly to separate liquids of different densities).
  2. After about 10 minutes in the centrifuge, the blood is separated into three layers.
  • Platelet deficient plasma
  • Platelet-rich plasma
  • Red blood cells
  1. The platelet-rich plasma is withdrawn using a syringe and injected into the scalp area, where hair growth is promoted.

There are not sufficient studies to prove that PRP is effective. It is also unclear for whom and under what circumstances it is most effective.

A recent study states, “The theoretical and scientific evidence for using PRP for hair growth is sufficient, but hair growth using PRP is still in its infancy, and the clinical evidence is still weak.

How Much is The Cost of PRP Treatment for Hair Loss?

PRP treatment typically comprises three treatments every 4-6 weeks, followed by a maintenance treatment every 4-6 months. The price is usually $1,500 to $3,500 for the first three treatments, with a single injection costing over $400. The price depends on several factors, including:

  • Your geographic location
  • Equipment Quality
  • Adding nutrients

Many insurance plans consider PRP cosmetics for hair loss and do not cover the cost of treatment. Check with your insurer if PRP treatment is covered.

Dos and Don’ts for PRP Injections

Some actions must be performed before and after completing the procedure. The same goes for what you shouldn’t do if you want to see results and minimize the risk of adverse side effects.

Back Before The Procedure

Before the treatment, wash and condition your hair. This keeps it clean and free of oil and dust. Before injection, creates a sterile environment on the scalp.

Consume a healthy breakfast and at least 16 ounces of water. This way, you are less likely to experience dizziness, fainting, or nausea. Remember, blood will be drawn. If doing it on an unfilled stomach makes you feel sick, you should do it before leaving.

Dosage After The Procedure

Resume your normal activities. PRP injections should in no way disable you or make you feel uncomfortable. Unlike other procedures, there should be no drowsiness or fatigue.

Wash your hair on your usual schedule unless the injection site is particularly irritated or painful.

Prohibited Procedures

Do not use hair products such as hairspray or gel at least three days before your PRP injection. It can affect you negatively later in terms of side effects.

If possible, avoid smoking or drinking too much before. You may be disqualified from this procedure because your platelet count is significantly reduced.

What not to do after the procedure

Do not dye or perm for at least 72 hours after PRP injection. Harsh chemicals can irritate the injection site and lead to complications. It also exacerbates scalp pain.

Conclusion

If you are concerned about your problem, several choices are available, including drugs such as Rogaine and Propecia and hair transplantation. Another option to consider is PRP treatment.

Despite the lack of professional evidence that PRP benefits hair loss, many individuals feel it is a safe and effective technique to reverse hair loss and encourage new hair growth.

Talk to your doctor about which treatment or combination is best for you.

There are several promising studies on PRP for hair loss.

However, most studies have been conducted in small study groups of no more than 40 people. Therefore, knowing if these results will work for everyone is difficult.

And your blood may not have enough platelets to be fully effective in restoring hair with PRP injection treatment.
